• Total service: Public transportation services roughly 33 million rides each weekday and serviced roughly 7.6 billion trips in 2024.
  

• Miles traveled: Since 1996, public transit has grown exponentially: In 1996, passengers traveled 41.4 billion miles, in 2006 passengers traveled 52.2 billion miles, and in 2016, they traveled 58.4 billion.

• Real estate value: Residential property values performed 42 percent better on average if they were located within a half-mile of public transportation with high-frequency service—called the “public transit shed.” Find more information here.

• Attractive to business: Rail transit is also an important factor for many businesses, as shown by State Farm’s campus adjacent to the MARTA Dunwoody station and New Balance’s headquarters next to the MBTA Boston Landing commuter rail station.

• Economic opportunity. Every $1 billion invested in public transportation supports and creates more than 50,000 jobs. Every $10 million in capital investment in public transportation yields $30 million in increased business sales.

• Business sales. Every $10 million in operating investment yields $32 million in increased business sales. In fact, over 77 percent of Federal funding for transit flows to the private sector, creating and supporting hundreds of thousands of jobs.

• Policy Framework Supportive of Transit: Investment in transit is good generally because of the many benefits it brings. This includes access to jobs; healthier life; education; livable communities and quality of life; safe mobility; energy efficiency; and environmental sustainability.

• Backbone of the Multi-Transit Network: Transit can be a backbone of the multi-transit mobility network, providing core mobility services for all while integrating other travel options.
