The widening of Highway 1 and the construction of a 31-mile rail trail along the old Union-Pacific Rail line are now linked together on a November transportation ballot initiative. Residents of Santa Cruz County will be asked to pay a half-cent sales tax to raise $530 million for the new projects as well as a passenger train station in Pajaro and a tourist trolley to run between Aptos and Capitola.
