In 1989, voters in Santa Barbara County approved a half-cent sales tax, known as Measure D, to support roads and transportation. In November 2006, a 30-year renewal of the tax, sold as the “train and lane” plan, failed at the ballot. The Santa Barbara County Association of Governments has placed a renewal of Measure D (called Measure A) to the ballot this November, before the current version expires in April 2010. Amount of funding at stake: $1.05 billion over 30 year.
